How to Prepare Your Child for a New School Year at Petite Luminaries Montessori

A new school year brings excitement, new experiences, and opportunities for growth. At Petite Luminaries Montessori, we understand that starting a new year—whether your child is joining us for the first time or returning to a familiar classroom—can feel like a big transition for the whole family. Here are some practical tips to help make the start of the school year smooth and successful.

1. Establish Routines Early

Children thrive on consistency. Begin introducing school-day routines a week or two before classes start. This includes:

  • Setting a regular bedtime and wake-up time

  • Practicing morning routines such as getting dressed, brushing teeth, and eating breakfast

  • Packing a small lunch or snack together to build independence

A predictable schedule helps your child feel secure and confident on the first day.

2. Talk About What to Expect

Discuss the new school year in a positive and reassuring way. You can:

  • Read books about starting school

  • Share what your child will see and do in the classroom (practical life activities, songs, outdoor play)

  • If they are nervous, acknowledge their feelings and remind them that it’s okay to feel a little unsure about new experiences

3. Involve Your Child in Preparation

Give your child some responsibility in getting ready for school. Simple things like choosing a lunchbox, labeling personal items, or selecting indoor shoes help children feel excited and involved. This also reinforces independence, a key Montessori principle.

4. Practice Independence at Home

Encourage your child to practice tasks they will do at school, such as:

  • Putting on and taking off shoes and jackets

  • Washing hands independently

  • Tidying up toys after play
These skills help your child feel capable and confident in their Montessori environment.

5. Prepare the Materials

Check your back-to-school list and ensure everything is ready. At PLM, we recommend:

  • A labeled water bottle

  • A complete change of clothes in a labeled bag

  • Indoor shoes that your child can put on independently

  • Weather-appropriate outdoor clothing for daily outdoor play

6. Create Calm Drop-Offs

Goodbyes can sometimes be hard, especially in the first few days. A quick, loving goodbye works best. Avoid lingering, as it can make the transition harder for your child. Trust that our teachers are here to comfort and guide your child as they settle in.

7. Communicate with Us

If you have questions or concerns, reach out to your child’s teacher or the PLM team. We value open communication and are here to support your family every step of the way.

A Great Year Ahead

With preparation and a positive attitude, your child will start the new school year ready to learn, explore, and grow. At Petite Luminaries Montessori, we are excited to partner with you in creating an inspiring and joyful learning journey.
